Are You Keeping the Right Score?

Are You Keeping the Right Score?

I like to think of myself as a great coach; Life Coach that is.  I have never really been a basketball fan, or any other sport for that matter.  But I believe that coaching is coaching whether it’s sports, life, finances or business.  The job of the coach is to support the client in realizing their potential and then motivating them to stretch themselves past the places that scare them.  The coach can’t do it for you but the coach can teach you so much that you are willing to do it for yourself.  Phil Jackson, coach of the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers, is said to be one of the greatest coaches of all time.  As a coach, he never stepped on the court to pose Michael Jordan’s hands as the shot clock ran down.  I can’t recall a time when he lifted Shaq in the air to dunk.  However, his coaching during practice and his commands from the sideline were enough to motivate his players to display their exceptional talents in every game they played.

For most of us playing the game of life, although challenging, has not been impossible.  Every day we hit the court and get it done.  However, for some of us it may seem that we are not winning as much as we would like to win and some of us haven’t seen a championship in ages.  Why is that?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  I believe that in most cases we are keeping the wrong score!

Some of us are so busy counting the balls that didn’t touch the net, didn’t stay in the net, and only circled the rim that we are forgetting or neglecting the balls that did make it in.  Look at your successes, not your perceived failures.  Count what counts.  Not many players leave the game rehearsing the shots that failed; especially if they won the game.  One reason is that these players know THEIR shot!  I mean, they know which shots they can make.  They spend their practice time perfecting THEIR shot.  So, if they miss a shot during the game…who cares, they will have plenty of opportunities to make that same shot in future games.  What’s YOUR shot?  I mean what’s that thing that you do?  You know you can do it; you can do it in your sleep?  What’s the one thing that gets you points?  Maybe you can cook, program computers, care for patients or you’re a great motivator.  You may be the one they call on when a convincing voice is needed to close a deal.

Today, find your shot.  Begin to practice, study and develop that thing you do.  Keep the proper score and you’ll have more and more championship days.

I love ya,

Coach Vernissa
